Jocelyn First Story: Lost in the Woods
This happened when I was around 20 years old. My colleague and I led twenty age 3 and 4 year old children from a child care centre to the Bukit Timah Hill Reserve for outdoor trip. Unfortunately, the colleague lost the map on the way. We were going to walk to the top of the hill for a picnic. However, we ended up lost in the forest. There was no paved roads, just narrow paths flanked by giant boulders. The children were crying. Luckily I had a piece of raffia rope which I tied to the branch of a tree. The children grabbed the rope and took turns sliding down the rock, soiled by the muddy water. They really freaked out. Luckily I had a tube of Mentol mints with me, and I divided each sweet and gave to the kids to calm their nerves. In the midst of our anguish and anxiety, we lose track of time. The bus driver who took us must have wondered what had happened to us. In my panic, I chanted the mantra of Avalokiteswara Bodhisattva. Three times cried out for Her help. Suddenly two white butterflies appeared about 6 inches from my waist. I noticed their presence because I couldn't move forward without them flying ahead. When the butterflies flew forward in a straight line, I followed behind. In less than 5 minutes, we entered the main road after passing through a large area of bushes. The driver's face was full of concern, he said we disappeared for at least an hour and a half. I feel very relieved because of the blessing of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The butterflies were also gone.
